West Place Animal Sanctuary Named National Finalist in Defender Above & Beyond Service Awards

Public voting in the Animal Welfare category open through Monday, June 28

Tiverton, RI, June 16, 2021 – Local nonprofit West Place Animal Sanctuary is one of five finalists in the Defender Above & Beyond Service Awards for the Animal Welfare category. Inspired by 501(c)(3) organizations’ commitment to others despite being pushed to their limits, Land Rover USA has established the awards to recognize and support U.S. nonprofits in seven categories. After entering a three-minute video submission, West Place was selected by the judges to move on to the final round of the contest, which consists of a 13-day period of public voting to determine the winning organization.

Members of the public may view the video entries of the Animal Welfare category finalists at https://www.landroverusa.com/experiences/events-and-sponsorships/defender-service-awards/vote/animal-welfare.html and vote once per day to determine the winning organization. Public voting begins at 10AM ET on Wednesday, June 16 and ends at 11:59PM ET on Monday, June 28. The winning organization will be awarded a customized Land Rover Defender to support their mission.

Wendy Taylor, Executive Director of West Place Animal Sanctuary, says, “We are ecstatic to represent Little Rhody on the national stage. We have been rescuing farm animals and rehabilitating wildlife for 14 years, and during that time we’ve been needed in areas where there are no roads of which to speak. We’ve had to rely on personal vehicles to rescue large animals and wildlife, and to transport animals like pigs, alpaca, peacocks, and others to the veterinary hospitals.”

West Place is an official response partner of the ASPCA, and was on site at the Westport, MA, case in 2016—the largest animal cruelty case in New England’s history. Taylor adds, “Winning a Land Rover Defender would give our organization a vital resource in our important work. As always, it is because of the generosity of our supporters that we are able to go above and beyond.”
