Located in Tiverton along the Farm Coast of New England, West Place Animal Sanctuary was founded in 2007 in response to an urgent need. We serve marginalized animal populations who are underrepresented, overlooked, underfunded, and often have nowhere else to go. A nationally recognized nonprofit, West Place serves as a resource for every town in Rhode Island through our rescue, rehabilitation, and responsible care of abused and neglected farm animals.
Our work is not easy, nor is it inexpensive, but we hope you will agree it is indispensable. More than just a farm animal sanctuary, West Place fosters compassion, innovation, and resiliency in our community. Your 401Gives donation will make an impact in a number of key areas:
West Place provides lifelong care to hundreds of animals 365 days a year, and our Medical & Nutritional Program lies at the heart of our mission. Each rescue animal benefits from a personalized nutrition and enrichment plan throughout all life stages. Routine medical care is one of our largest expenses, and we currently have more than a dozen animals receiving daily medications.
West Place also dedicates significant resources to educating the public, especially our students. Our expansive Humane Education & Workforce Development Internship Program provides hands-on experiential education that isn’t available anywhere else in the state. We also welcome groups of all sizes, ages, and backgrounds for interactive and education sanctuary tours.
Caring for these vulnerable animals is a 7-day-a-week, 365-day-a-year job. Our challenging work is further complicated by the ongoing battle against avian flu (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza), and the biosecurity measures and resources that keep our domestic birds alive. Your donations through The Birds of West Place Memorial Fund are truly life-saving!
Since our founding, West Place has:
- provided a permanent home and lifelong care to 1,700+ animals rescued from cruelty, neglect, and natural disasters;
- rehabilitated more than 1,200 injured and orphaned wild animals and returned them to their natural habitats;
- invested in 240 student internships, offering hands-on learning for future professionals;
- inspired our community to join our mission of compassion, dedicating over 114,635 volunteer hours; and
- engaged in sustainable agriculture initiatives, modeling responsible land use and conservation.
